New Orleans’ Politics: Interesting And Entertaining As Usual

Kimberly Williamson Butler Campaign Website picture

Please note the above picture. It is a campaign picture for New Orleans mayoral candidate Kimberly Williamson Butler. It was taken from her campaign website. It shows what appears to be Kimberly in part of the New Orleans’ French Quarter. Only it’s not the French Quarter. It’s not even New Orleans. It’s been exposed to have been taken at Disneyland’s New Orleans Square.

Now some non-New Orleanians might say that since New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina there’s no place to take a picture in the French Quarter. Such a claim would be based upon ignorance since the French Quarter, in fact, escaped most of the damage that much of New Orleans experienced. I first read about the escapades of Kimberly Williamson Butler on the Boing Boing blog, Metroblogging New Orleans and the Wonkette! blog.

Want more entertaining political hijinx from Kimberly, the clerk of the criminal court in Orleans Parish? Well, look no further than early March when Kimberly had a run-in with a district court judge regarding her office’s inept handling of FEMA fund applications. That mess resulted in the judge ordering Kimberly to be held on a contempt charge. So what did lil’ Kimberly do? She skipped town! For a week! After she finally showed up and turned herself in she was sentenced to three days in Orleans Parish Prison without bail and ordered to pay a $500 fine on contempt of court charges. And when she was released, she announced she would not seek re-election as clerk and run for mayor instead. What fun!

The odds of her winning the New Orleans’ mayoral election are slim indeed. There’s almost two dozen candidates running as it is.

The political circus in the Big Easy is always interesting. Especially this year.
