Tin Men — Freaks For Industry!

Yesterday I received the CD entitled “Freaks For Industry!” by the group Tin Men. This New Orleans trio consists of Washboard Chaz, Alex McMurray and Matt Perrine. The music from these folks really doesn’t fall into any category neatly but suffice to say the style is reminiscent of New Orleans street performers. Picture in your mind three guys in Jackson Square, one playing a Sousaphone, one playing an electric guitar plugged into a battery-powered amp or an a acoustic guitar and the third playing a washboard. The guys on washboard and guitar taking turns singing and doing harmonies. Now take an eclectic mix of 1930’s era combo jazz, some ragtime-esque, some parlor tunes, some uptempo blues and blend in a heaping mess of New Orleans groove and you have Tin Men’s “Freaks For Industry.” I really love this CD and it (and others) are available via Washboard Chaz’s and Alex McMurray’s websites. Now if you’re expecting a complex and detailed review of this album you’re going to be sorely disappointed. I’m just giving my personal opinion and am trying to describe Tin Men’s “sound” as best I can. The bottom line is that it’s good music and personally every cut on the CD is a winner. For example, the album starts off with the cool tune “Palm Court Strut” which instructs the listener to “do the Palm Court Strut/Shake your butt” — not exactly deep lyrics but it’s supposed to be a fun tune. So shake your booty all night long with this song. [An aside…when I saw the title of the song I was reminded of all the little motels I’ve seen personally or seen in pictures named “Palm Court” {and variants thereof}.]
Another song I particularly enjoy is “So Uptown” which tells of heartbreak caused by a mean woman who runs around behind the singer’s back and hangs around with the Ninth Ward Gang as well as others. It’s a great love-gone-wrong song. Tin Men also pull off a great cover of the classic song “Mess Around” as well as the jazzy blues tune “Feets Too Big.” When they do “The Man From Harlem” it’s almost as if they have invoked the spirits of Django Reinhardt and Cab Calloway while performing this on NBC Radio in the 1930’s. Great stuff! I could go on and on heaping praise on top of praise on this album but my fingers would fall off from typing so much. C’mon…take a chance and get this CD. You won’t be disappointed.
