“Sing, Beast, Sing” (”I’m Mad” — Willie Mabon)
In the early days of HBO, filler materials consisting of short films were used often between movies. Most of it was from independent filmakers, some of whom are fairly well known in the industry today. I’ve always been a fan of unique and interesting animation and also a music nut so when I first saw the animated short called “Sing, Beast, Sing” I knew I was seeing something very special. I really loved the song they used but for several years I had no clue who actually performed the song and where I could find it. None of the regional record stores were any help in the early 80’s and remember this was well before the internet so my research resources were severely limited. It wasn’t until I was working for a radio station in Panama City, Florida years later that a fellow employee, Robert (we’ve been friends ever since) not only knew it was Willie Mabon’s “I’m Mad”, he actually gave me a copy as a present of the Chess Records 78 on which it originally was released. I still have that record somewhere. Anyway, I now have a couple of Chess Records boxed sets which have the song on it and I still enjoy that tune today. It remains one of my alltime favorite blues songs. And thanks to YouTube, I’ve found the video for “Sing, Beast, Sing” online.
