PhotoHunt 102: Metal

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Metal” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This one is a bit bittersweet for both my wife and me. Hurricane Katrina destroyed and damaged thousands of homes and businesses along the gulf coast. My wife and I have many friends and family there and my wife grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi. One of the businesses we frequented over the past 20 years was a little restaurant on U.S. Highway 90 in Pass Christian, Mississippi between Espy Avenue and Shadow Lawn Avenue called Pirate’s Cove. It was a nice little po’boy restaurant that was one of my wife’s favorites. She introduced me to the place the first time I went down to the coast when we were engaged. Here’s what it looked like before the storm:

And this is what it looked like after Hurricane Katrina.

All that remained was the concrete slab it stood upon as its floor tiles. Nothing else survived.
You may be asking, what does this have to do with this week’s PhotoHunt topic: metal? Bear with me…
About ten months after Katrina, my wife and I had the opportunity to go visit her parents who at that time had bought a new home in Biloxi after losing their home of over 50 years in Gulfport. If memory serves me correctly the folks who owned Pirate’s Cove had built a temporary replacement for their restaurant at Memorial Park on Second Street in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

They reopened in a little metal building still making and serving some of the best po’boys you’ll ever eat. I actually took the photo above December of 2006 and unfortunately they were closed for the holidays but I wanted to take a picture anyway. Unless plans have changed, they plan on building a permanent restaurant on the original site along U.S. Highway 90 sometime in the future. Currently they are located at 350 E Second Street in Pass Christian and their phone number is 228-452-4741. I recommend their roast beef po’boy with gravy and also their oyster po’boy “fully dressed.”

Sad about their place being destroyed in Katrina, but fantastic that they opened up again and are planning to rebuild!! Food seems to be a theme in metal today :)

Taxes
Yet another reason to get behind The Fair Tax. Imagine: no more TurboTax! *heh* Almost as wonderful a phrase as “No more IRS!”

Thanks for sharing this story and photos’. I’m a Katrina survivor too living in New Orleans…..many, many sad stories out there, huh? But many stories of perseverence and hope. I’ll be sure to stop by Pirate’s Cove the next time I’m on the coast.
My photohunter entry was taken last week in central Mississippi where I’m originally from. I’d love for you to visit.
Happy Easter and blessings to you and yours.

I’m impressed by the way you here have documented the demostating forces of Katarina. And also the strong will of human kind to never give up.
Excellent post

What a powerful grouping of pictures for that story and a great choice for the weekend. Loved the pictures from the church also, reminds me of when I hosted the largest Easter Egg hunt for our UMC church…we always had to stay inside though, up here it is still a sloppy mess. Thanks for visiting the Cafe today.

that was a bad storm for sure, we live about 80 miles north of where Andrew when through, it was a small tight storm, katrina was much larger. we do recover. my original photo post had some old farming iron and other farmhouse items, I added a second entry because of something I saw while visiting other photo hunts, please stop by both, happy easter
