PhotoHunt 88: Small

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Small” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This week, I present two photos I took last spring of a tiny critter on the handle of the trash can that I keep by the side of my home. It may look big in these photos but trust me, it’s pretty small.

I found this tiny frog on the handle of the trash can beside my house last spring (late March actually). I had never seen a frog of this color before and I assumed that it might be something a little uncommon for this area. It’s really a very light grey almost white with black spots. At the time I had absolutely no clue as to what type of frog it was. After all, we have tons of little green tree frogs and just as many of the larger toads. But this was a first for me. I thought it might be something rare. So I started digging and sent emails to some university scientists who might know.
A few days later, Dr. F. Wayne King, Emeritus Curator of Herpetology at the Florida Museum of Natural History wrote me with the following information:
The frog in your photograph is a Cope’s Gray Treefrog, Hyla chrysoscelis. Typically they are gray with darker markings, but their color varies from white to gray to greenish gray. Yours is white. They have a white spot beneath the eye on the upper lip, which is clearly seen in your photo.
When Cope’s Gray Treefrog is resting its hindleg is folded alongside its body, as in your photograph. When in that position, you cannot see the color of the skin hidden between the folds. The color of the hidden skin on the hindleg in Cope’s Gray Treefrog is orange, which is diagnostic of the species.
The Bird-voiced Treefrog, Hyla avivoca, is a slightly smaller gray-colored treefrog found along the Apalachicola River. The hidden surface of its hindlegs are green.
Cope’s Gray Treefrog is fairly common in north Florida, including around Tallahassee — see:

I hope this answers your questions about the treefrog in your photo. But if not, let me know.

I appreciated Dr. King’s information. He answered all the questions I had concerning this frog. I honestly don’t ever remember seeing one like this but apparently they are fairly common around here. But I haven’t seen one like this since.

That frog is almost cool enough that I would scream like a little girl if I saw it in my yard. Almost. Great photo for the “small” theme.

Christmas Cuteness. Warning, may cause eye leakage
I saw this at Hot Air. I agree with their assessment, it is cheesy but irresistible.
But aside from the warm and fuzzy factor, I believe this glimpses and reminders are important, regardless of politics and ideology, because…
